I’m often asked how I, as a one-man business, have managed to avoid the droning/cracking exhaust problems being experienced by other larger, (much larger!) manufacturers. But, I did encounter these problems, the droning and the cracking, and I fixed them.

It’s called R & D.

These exhaust designs are specifically for the Supercharged Exige S/Elise SC models. The bore size is specific, as are the packing densities and materials. If you’re planning further tuning, or racing – please talk to me first!

If you’re planning to fit ANY aftermarket exhaust system to these cars, it HAS to be a straight-thru design of the correct bore for best power and (arguably) best noise!

For the Performance Pack/240Cup cars, the 2bular system is a full 2.5” bore. I know of at least one manufacturer whose system appears to be 2.5” but inside the silencer, it’s only 2” – shocking.

 

I should point out that a straight-thru design, like the 2bular, has a wonderful exhaust sound compared to std.  Even the quietest 8”dia, still makes the car sound like it looks.

My std offering is a 7”dia x 24” system with an oval tip exiting in the same place as std.

As a guide, this system gave a reading of 96dbs on the drive-by at Donington.

For owners with the Performance Pack, it has to be the 8”dia system with the full 2.5” bore. This has an unbeatable combination of howling exhaust note under acceleration but in cruise mode or on the Motorway, it’s quiet enough to have a normal conversation in the cabin.

If you’re planning further tuning, re-flashing the ECU or fitting the Sports Cat/2bular 4-1 header, I would strongly recommend fitting the 8”dia system for best noise control.

 

for Summer 2008:

 

A new, 2bular Thru-Diffuser exhaust design, featuring the popular 8”dia system. Owners looking for a Sports Car sound with no drone and discrete noise levels at Motorway speeds, this is the system for you. A re-designed layout means there is no cutting/profiling of the numberplate heat-shield required. The oval tip exits the diffuser panel same a std. You keep the rear grilles in place, the car looks like std, but now it sounds like it looks!

Here are the two options;

The longer, 24” long system in GT3 Style requires the removal of the rear grille panels and numberplate plinth and trimming of the heat-shield behind those parts. This silencer has central in/out pipe work and a Single Tip exit – usually with a 3”dia slash-cut tip. A 2bular Panel Kit * is required to support the rear edge of the diffuser and the numberplate.

The shorter, 22” long system in Thru-Diffuser layout is a straight swap for the std system. No removal of grilles, no trimming anything. This silencer has off-set in/out pipe work, moving the bulk of the silencer inboard, like std. It’s slightly shorter, to clear the std Cat.

In the pic below are the two 8” systems; the 22” long, Off-set Thru-Diffuser and the 24” long, GT3 Single Tip. 

Thanks to the use of lightweight pipe work on the Thru-Diffuser design, they both weigh the same – 7.7Kgs.

For comparison, the smaller 5”dia, Lotus Stg2 n/a system alongside, weighs 8.1Kgs!

Noise – this system, in Single Tip form, has never been known to fail a UK noise test, even on Honda installs. However, I have to advise some caution. There seems to be an enormous difference in the way the UK circuits are measuring drive-by noise. The above noise readings are recent feedback from my customers.  Readings for the same exhaust system, on the same car, seems to vary wildly from circuit to circuit. Bear in mind, induction noise plays its part too –as does the weather conditions on the day. Its all a bit hit-and- miss and very frustrating for all TrackDay enthusiasts.

I have just completed work on getting the 3”dia tailpipe of the Single Tip GT3 systems to exit through this new panel design. I realise not everyone wants to remove the rear grilles and numberplate plinth.
