S1 Exige and Elise:
A very popular machine with trackday enthusiasts! UK owners have to pay close attention to noise limits; they’re coming down all the time, unfortunately.
My std offering is the 7”dia x 24” system – there are various pics below of the tip designs you can specify.
I always match the bore to the power. Typically, I use a 2 ¼” dia bore for power outputs up to 180bhp. This results in a deep, bassy exhaust note, rising to a wonderful howl at the top end. With a Cat/Sports Cat/Silenced De-cat, you’ll meet all the UK noise limits but still have a great sounding exhaust. De-Cat Pipes won’t help if you’re marginal on noise!
I’m asked many times to make an exhaust with “a high-pitched, race-car sound”. On a “straight-thru” system, the larger the silencer, the quieter the note (all else being equal; bore, packing etc). So, to make a “noisy” exhaust, you need a small dia silencer, say 4”. But, it will still have the typical 4-cyl, bassy note. To make a high-pitched,
race-car sound, you must compress the exhaust gas. This means coming down on the pipe dia. I’ve seen some exhausts with 1 5/8” dia(!), a truly spine-tingling exhaust note but -
a/. It’s costing the owner some serious bhp and ………
b/. The engine has to work much harder to pump the exhaust gas out, meaning a serious increase in fuel consumption. So a “race-car” sound but less power and more fuel? I don’t make that type of exhaust.
Always ask the exhaust manufacturer the bore size of the exhaust they’re selling to you. I’ve seen owners with a VHPD engine using a 2”dia exhaust – madness.

2bular S1 Elise 3 inch Motorsport Tip

2bular S1 Elise twin Tip

2bular S1 Elise with Oval Tip

2bular 8inch dia 3inch bore
Well, I managed to squeeze the 8”dia silencer behind the S1 Elise/Exige rear clam!
This size of silencer is working really well on other high-powered installs like the Exige S and the 2-Eleven. The 3” bore version is particularly suited to Turbo outputs.
With the UK circuit noise-limits coming down again this year, this size of silencer will help any big-power K-series owners and of course, anyone with the Honda conversion. (You need the smaller adaptor pipe shown for the Link Up kit – please advise when ordering).
There’s a 3” bore version for anyone with over 300bhp (Honda Supercharged etc) This system means you have the correct bore to match the prodigious power of the Honda install.
The best noise control is achieved with a single tip exhaust, the same diameter as the system. Now, I realise that this isn’t the best look for an S1 but if you think your install is marginal on noise, please keep this in mind.

Comparison of 2bular 7”dia with a 6”dia silencer.

Here you see the difference in size between the two diameters. – the 6”dia example is a well-known make. The 7” 2bular is 1.2Kgs lighter than the 6”dia!
